If you have been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, chances are, your physician has recommended that you use a CPAP machine. These machines are amazing at resolving the issue of not getting enough air during sleep. They are considered the “GOLD STANDARD” for treating sleep apnea.
There are a few reasons that you might want an alternative.
- Currently, because of a recall on the most popular brand of CPAP machines, there’s a shortage.
- PAP machines are difficult to clean effectively
- CPAP machines require a mask to be worn that can sometimes be uncomfortable and be confining and/or restrictive during sleep.
- For people who make trips to the bathroom during the night, having to disconnect and reconnect the CPAP can be an inconvenience.
- CPAPs are portable but a bit cumbersome to take on short trips and vacations
- CPAPs require electricity or battery. Hence during a power outage or if a battery runs out, a CPAP will not function.
- CPAPs aren’t very sexy.
Oral Appliances can be an effective and comfortable substitute for CPAPs. Their advantages are:
- They are readily made and custom fit for comfort.
- They are simple to clean and maintain.
- NO MASK is required, just a ‘retainer-like’ device, similar to what most teenagers wear after getting their braces off.
- There’s no worry about having to take it off in the middle of the night for a bathroom run.
- These appliances are small, fit in a tiny case and are easily packed in an overnight bag for utmost portability and convenience.
- NO ELECTRICITY is required.
- While not totally sexy, oral appliances can be simply removed and replaced with minimal effort.
