Can't open or close without pain?
Normally, you should be able to move your jaw up and down and from side to side smoothly and without pain.
Opening as wide as being able to place 3 fingers between your teeth is considered normal. Less, might mean that there’s a blockage in one or more of the joints.
Sometimes, people can’t open their jaw at all. There are various reasons for that but because that might impede eating and even breathing, it is something that requires immediate attention.
The bottom line is, you should be able to freely move your jaw side to side and open without noises and without pain.
At SCDS&TMJ, we use various therapies to help you move your jaws, and function properly and comfortably.
